Digging in for beauty

Family and friends lend a hand Saturday morning as volunteers for Community Planting Day, a downtown beautification project of the Friends of MainStreet Roswell organization. Millie Smith, 4, and Dante Duran, 22 months, dig up the soil in one of the planters in front of the Chaves County Courthouse, while Shane Duran, standing, and Mayra Duran guide their efforts. About 30 adults and 8 youth volunteered for the fourth annual effort, which involves tree trimming, debris pick-up, window cleaning and the planting of about 165 flowers along both sides of Main Street from Fifth Street to Walnut Street.
