I’m a bird watcher

Bird watcher Nancy Herick made a stop Monday at Bitter Lake National Wildlife Refuge on her way back to Albuquerque. Herick said she was returning from Big Bend National Park in Texas, where she also was birdwatching. With her telescope, Herick said she could see black-necked stilts, which are shore birds; shovelers and teals, which are types of ducks; and a peregrine falcon. Herick said birds are most active in the morning, when they like to eat. She said there are more than 500 species of birds at Bitter Lake. The wildlife refuge is located on East Pine Lodge Road about 7 miles east of Roswell. (Timothy P. Howsare Photo)
