Tennis players from District 4-5A have one more shot on Saturday in Artesia to advance to the state playoffs next week in Albuquerque.

The district tournament was held last week and this weekend individual matches are taking place for Goddard, Roswell, Lovington and Artesia.

The site host creates the bracket and that job this year fell to Artesia head coach Tim Trentham, who said the selection process was lengthy.

“If you have the No. 1 from Lovington and the No. 2 from Roswell going in as a singles player, you have to look and see how they fared head-to-head against one another so that you can seed each one of those players,” Trentham said. “Because once individuals start, it’s no longer based on flights so it is not the No. 1 playing the No. 1 and the No. 2 playing the No. 2. You could have a No. 8 singles player on the ladder playing against the No. 1 singles player from from another school.”

Roswell’s Evelyn Williams is the No. 1 player in the girls singles bracket. She is the top player in the district and on the Lady Coyotes squad. She will face either the No. 8 player in Goddard’s Alli Lara or the No. 9 player in Artesia’s Jennifer Rios in the quarterfinal round.

Lovington’s Jace Crawford is the top player on the boys singles side and will face No. 8 Caleb Carnathan from Artesia or Roswell’s Gabriel Gomez who is seeded at No. 9 in the quarterfinals.

In boys doubles, Goddard’s Leo Melendez and Chris Brooks are the No. 1 seeds and have an opening match against the No. 8 seeds Sergio Lujan and Melchor Pena from Lovington.

Goddard’s Lizzi Latimer and Tati Villa are No. 1 in girls doubles and will face either Lovington’s Samantha Armendariz and Cristal Estrada or fellow Lady Rockets’ Reagan Crenshaw and Kaitlyn Blakeney in the quarterfinal round.

The tournament starts Saturday at 8 a.m. at the Mack Chase Sports Complex in Artesia.
