The National Day of Prayer event in Roswell will be held during the noon hour May 3 on the west steps of the Chaves County Courthouse at 501 N. Main St.

Local officials will join local pastors and churches for an hour of prayer for our city, state and nation.

Millions gather annually on the first Thursday of May across our nation and in 10 other nations around the world, including the United Kingdom and Australia, to join in prayer.

This year’s them is unity. The National Day of Prayer was created in 1952 by a joint resolution of Congress, and signed into law by President Harry S. Truman. In 1988, the law was unanimously amended by both the House and the Senate and signed into law by President Ronald Reagan on Thursday, May 5, 1988, designating the first Thursday of May as a day of national prayer. Every president since 1952 has signed a National Day of Prayer proclamation.

Local pastors and churches are invited to join the event in their areas. Employers and businesses are asked to close for the noon hour to allow employees to attend the event.
