William Gerald Harris passed away on April 13, 2018. He was born on June 29, 1927 in Melrose, NM to Hollin and Ruby Harris.
Gerald graduated from Melrose High School on May 24, 1945 where he lettered in basketball, baseball, track and football. Upon graduating he entered the US Navy. His basic training was at the US Naval Station in San Diego, California. He received an honorable discharge. Gerald then enrolled at Eastern New Mexico University in Portales and graduated with a major in Business & Economics and a minor in Education.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Leon Harris. He is survived by his sister, Wyvona McGuyer, 3 children, Susan Harris, Richard Harris, and Cynthia Harris Ziegler, 6 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, 3 nieces, and 2 nephews.
Gerald was employed at Valley Chevrolet in the new car and truck department for 20 years. During this time he received may awards including Chevrolet’s highest honor, Legion of Leaders, Truck Honor Club, and Salesman of the Year. After leaving Valley Chevrolet, Gerald opened a used car and truck sales business on South Main Street, which he operated for 18 years. He then put to use his minor in Education to be a substitute teacher with the Roswell Independent School District for 16 years. Gerald retired from RISD in October 2000.
The family would like to express their appreciation to the staff at Sunset Villa for their caring and compassion. The family would like to sincerely thank Johnny Childers of Roswell for his long friendship and help to Gerald over the last 25 years.
Internment will be at the Veterans Memorial at South Park Cemetery in Roswell.
