DEXTER — The Dexter Lady Demons softball team (22-3, 13-2) ended their regular season Tuesday pounding the Jal Lady Panthers (5-20, 0-20) 15-0 and 14-1 at the Hal Bogle Sports Complex.

After the game, five Lady Demon seniors and their families were honored for their contributions over the years. Bryana Munoz, Marlou Blankvoort, Allyssa Madden, Dominque Silvas and Kassandra Madrid said so long to the Lady Demon faithful.

“The seniors came in when I came in their eighth-grade year,” said Dexter head coach Kim Smith. “They’ve put in (work) year ‘round, not just during the season. We’re here in the offseason. We’re here two or three hours after practice and they’re the leaders that have built this program and they’re going to be missed.”

Bryana Munoz, who this time next year will be competing at the University of Texas at El Paso, gave the home crowd something to remember. She tossed a no-hitter in the first game and in the second game she hit two home runs. The first one was a solo shot in the first inning and the second was a grand slam in the bottom of the third.

Smith feels that people need to remember that Dexter performs as a unit. The Lady Demons are the three-time defending 3A state champions.

“We all can get better,” Smith said of Munoz. “I don’t want to call out a single player because this is a team sport, from one to 14, they all performed today and did their job. She (Munoz) is our leader and we go as she goes.”

Last weekend, the Lady Demons suffered their first losses in 3A as the Loving Lady Falcons swept Dexter 5-3 and 1-0. Smith shrugs it off and reminds people to look at the big picture.

“It’s one pitch at a time,” Smith said. “We’re going to come out here and work hard. It’s just a game.”

Smith thinks the Lady Demons came out relaxed against the Lady Panthers.

“We went back to basics yesterday (Monday) and they responded and did everything we asked them to do from yesterday,” Smith said.

In addition to scoring a combined 29 runs, the Lady Demons also had a medley of 26 hits. While Dexter fans are thinking about the 3A state playoffs next week in the Albuquerque area, Smith is reminding her team to live in the moment.

“We don’t want to look towards next week,” Smith said. “We’ve got to take care of businesses today and come back and work on things in practice tomorrow (Wednesday). We’re getting ready, just one pitch at a time.”
