Roswell police have identified a man found dead Friday night as 52-year-old Todd Porter Evans.

The New Mexico Office of the Medical Investigator confirmed the identity of Evans by his fingerprints, said Roswell Police Department spokesman Todd Wildermuth.

Colby Thornton, 41, and Dublas Chicas, 17, have both been charged with second-degree murder in connection with what police are calling a fatal beating, Wildermuth said.

Court records indicate that Thornton has been detained with $250,000 in cash or bond required for release. No public records were available for Chicas.

Police statements entered with the 5th Judicial District Court of Chaves County indicate that Roswell Police Department officers detained and interrogated three men after being called shortly before midnight Friday to the 500 block of South Main Street.

Under a bridge near the former Payless Shoe Source store, they found Evans, bloodied and unresponsive with significant head injuries. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Three men, including Thornton and Chicas, were observed lying on the same mattress as Evans with blood on them. Police describe all three as “heavily intoxicated,” but stated that one suspect, a 51-year-old male, had a minimal amount of blood on him. He has not been charged in the incident at this time.

Criminal complaints filed with the court allege that Thornton hit and kicked Evans multiple times on his face and head and that police found him with a significant amount of blood on his shoes, as well as blood on his hands.

A witness who called 911 also described Thornton and Chicas as fighting with the victim.

The witness, as well as Thornton and Chicas, also said a fourth man was seen beating the victim and was believed to have run away from the scene before police arrived.

Wildermuth did indicate that police are continuing to investigate the homicide and that investigators are looking into the possibility of an additional person having been present during the crime.
