69 years old Resided in Roswell NM, Passed peacefully on April 29, 2018. Verna passed away in Albuquerque NM at Genesis Bear Canyon facility with her husband by her side.

Verna was born on January 25, 1949 in Denver Colorado to Virginia L. Smith & William A. Smith Sr. whom precedes her in death. She is survived by her two siblings William A. Smith Jr of Victoria TX, and Cheryl A. Smith, Husband Robert J. Chavez, Daughters Jamie & Amanda Chavez, Niece Krystle Smith all of Roswell NM. She is survived by many nephews and nieces that reside in Albuquerque NM, Rio Rancho NM, Texas, Arkansas and Florida.

Verna Married the love of her life Robert J. Chavez on November 7, 1975 in Roswell NM and started their family which consist of their two daughters Jamie Maria Chavez and Amanda L. Chavez both of Roswell NM. Verna and Roberts love was so remarkable; that they renewed their wedding vows in 1988.

Verna Graduated High School in 1964 from Eastwood High School in El Paso Texas.

She was the first female volunteer firefighter of Chavez county with Berrendo volunteer Fire Department.

She also was a member of the Pride O Lions club that merged with Downtown Lions Club. She was willing to help anyone who asked.

Verna had a love for all animals; cats, dogs, rats, cows and horses; and especially vultures that creeped out her daughter Amanda. All of these were her favorite. She loved scrapbooking and doing crafts which she would enter in the Eastern New Mexico State Fair and had won several awards for them. For many years she was a Christmas ornament decorator at Christmas by Krebs where she retired from in 2003.

Verna loved Her DALLAS COWBOYS!!!!! And would get very mad if someone said anything bad about them. She also loved to take pictures of clouds, a storm chasing (which her niece Krystle inherited from her), also off roading and random road trips.

Verna and her sister Cheryl loved to dye each other’s hair in Verna’s kitchen listening to Michael Bolton, Phil Collins, and Michael Jackson very loudly.
