There’s still time to register for the 34th annual Milkman Triathlon, which is slated to take place June 2, at 8 a.m. in Dexter.

The deadline to register is Wednesday at 3 p.m.

The race kicks off with a 500-meter swim in Lake Van, then contestants bike 20K toward Bottomless Lakes State Park.

The race concludes with a 5K run through the Dexter National Fish Hatchery. Refreshments, like chocolate milk and ice cream, will be waiting for racers at the finish line.

In order to be eligible to participate, racers must either be members of the USA Triathlon or must have purchased a single event permit.

An individual may compete as a soloist, doing all three sports, or three people can form a relay team with each person doing one of the sports. The team must include a member of the opposite sex. Soloists may also swim on a team, subject only to the solo fee.

Race packets, as well as USA Triathlon license checks, will be available Friday at Lake Van from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Racers are asked to bring a photo ID and their USAT license.

Free space is available for camping for triathletes and families at Lake Van, as well as RV hookups. The availability of space is a first come, first serve basis.

Race director Larry Marshall, along with 150 volunteers, has been involved with the triathlon since it was founded 34years ago. Marshall is thankful to the Pecos Valley community for continuing to support the event.

“This event continues to exist for the fun and lifetime fitness,” Marshall said. “It is a competitive race, but many people are doing it to accomplish the whole distance. A lot of it is for the satisfaction of being able to finish.”

The Milkman Triathlon was founded by New Mexico Dairy Days and the Roswell Redcoats.
