Renewable energy accounted for more than 30 percent of the state’s electricity generation during the first two months of 2018.

According to an announcement by Gov. Susana Martinez this is the first time in state history that alternative energy sources such as solar, wind and geothermal were utilized more than natural gas and coal.

In 2015, Martinez introduced an energy policy that has been implemented since by the Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources Department. Among other things, the policy calls for utilizing a range of energy sources.

In addition to accounting for 30 percent of total electricity generation in January and February, renewable energy generation also ranked second in energy generation the first two months of 2018, surpassing natural gas-fired generation in January and coal-fired generation in February.

Oil production also has increased in recent months. In 2017 New Mexico produced a record 470,000 barrels a day.
