A Memorial Day service was held over the weekend at Fort Stanton State Veterans Cemetery. It is the final resting place place for people who lived and worked at Fort Stanton from 1896 to the present, said Lincoln County historian Lynda Sánchez. Located next to the Merchant Marine and Military Cemetery, it was dedicated as a state veterans cemetery in 2015. Matt Midgett is shown riding his horse Belle. During World War II, a higher percentage of Merchant Marines were killed than in any other branch of the U.S. armed forces. Many died before World War II even started as they protected commercial ships from German U-boats. (Submitted Photo)
