Early and absentee vote totals released Tuesday evening favored the challenger in one closely watched local primary race.

Former sheriff’s office deputy Mike Herrington led incumbent Britt Snyder, 1,311 votes to 934 votes, in the race for Chaves County sheriff.

Meanwhile, in the race for Chaves County Assessor, challenger Daniel Pruitt — an appraiser in the county office — trailed incumbent Mark Willard in early balloting. Pruitt’s early vote total was 829, compared to Willard’s 1,237.

The totals listed include early and absentee ballots only, and don’t reflect Election Day votes, which are still being counted. The polls closed at 7 p.m.
