Jean was born on September 13, 1932 in Portales, NM to Albert E. and Elva W. Guss. She grew up in Roswell, NM with her other 11 (eleven) siblings. Jean attended Roswell High School and graduated in 1950. It was there that she met the love of her life Hoie B. Sparkman and they were married on April 21, 1951. Jean and Hoie were married for 67 wonderful years.

Jean was active in her church throughout her entire life. She was very involved in various mission programs both foreign and home. Jean was active in vacation bible school, G.A’s, and W.M.U as well as many other mission activities.

Jean’s focus and pleasure in life came from serving others. Jean made it a priority to ensure that no one was left in need. Jean always put others first and couldn’t turn away a person in need. Anyone who met Jean fell in love with her immediately and dearly. Jean enjoyed singing in the choir, crossword puzzles, studying her bible and cooking for family and friends. Jean loved the mountains and her annual trip to cowboy camp. Her absolute favorite meal was homemade beans and corn bread.
