A former teacher and coach at Goddard High School has been named the new head football coach at Hagerman High School.

Hagerman athletic director Alex Morales said Guy Rivers will replace Adrian Olivas. Rivers is expected to take the reigns in July.

Morales didn’t have any immediate information on the new hire when asked for comment and Rivers wasn’t available for comment at press time. However, his Facebook page said he graduated from Clovis High School in 1985 and later attained a bachelor’s degree in education from Eastern New Mexico University. He taught and coached at Goddard High School from 2008 to 2012 and in 2013 he moved to Hobbs where he has been a coach and teacher at Houston Middle School.

Rivers inherits a program that hasn’t had a winning season since 2014 when Casey Crandall went 10-2 and lost to Escalante in the state playoffs.

The year before, Crandall guided Hagerman to a state championship and a 12-0 record.

Since Crandall left, the Bobcats have had three coaches from 2015 to 2017 and have gone 7-19 during that span.

Andrew Rodriguez coached Hagerman to a 5-5 record in 2015. Kris Foust was 2-5 in 2016 and last year, Adrian Olivas went 0-9.

Olivas took the job in early 2017 after being a longtime assistant at Artesia High School. Olivas graduated from Artesia in 2003 and was a member of the 2001 team that defeated St. Pius 35-28 in the state title game.

Olivas said he resigned as the head coach in March and finished his teaching duties in Hagerman when the school year ended last month.

“My intentions were to start a football program with the talented kids they have,” Olivas said. “However, my philosophy on academics and athletics working hand-in-hand was not a good fit.”

Olivas added that he liked the student-athletes in Hagerman and is wishing them good luck when the season starts Aug. 24 against Capitan.

Olivas said he has rejoined the Bulldogs as an assistant.
