In a letter to the editor of June 28, John Ford says: “Every right, privilege, and freedom we American citizens enjoy are the result of the efforts of liberals.” That is to say, we all owe the Democratic Party our quality of life. Nothing could be further from the truth.

As a pertinent example, consider the passage of Amendment 15 to the U.S. Constitution, stating “The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude.” As a matter of fact, not a single Democrat supported this proposal! The vote in the House was 144 Republicans in favor, 39 Democrats and 4 Republicans against, with 27 Republicans and 8 Democrats not voting. The vote in the Senate was 39 Republicans in favor, 8 Democrats and 5 Republicans against, with 13 Republicans and 1 Democrat not voting.

If it had been up to the Democrats in Congress at the time, African-Americans and other minorities would never have gained the right to vote.

It may be worth mentioning (although Mr. Ford does not use the term) that one of the most disingenuous gestures of modern times has been the co-opting of the term “progressive” by the American Left to suggest that only they are in favor of progress while conservatives are against it.

This notion is outright fraud. There is nothing anti-progress about favoring capitalism and free market economics with minimal government interference, which is what conservatism is all about. Conservatives have been forward-thinking on social issues as well, as I have suggested.
