Johnny Gonzales’ annual school supply giveaway will be held at the end of the month.

Seven months after her husband’s passing, Mary Gonzales said she has heard Johnny’s voice encouraging her “to get up” and help the community out again. After saying she is not willing to let their legacy go, Mary Gonzales said she hosted an Easter event this spring and is motivated to host the school supply giveaway as the school year draws close.

On Saturday, local families in need of school supplies can register at the Roswell Mall, located at 4501 N. Main St., in the community room near JCPenney at 6 p.m. Once they are registered, Mary Gonzales said they will be provided with the location of the July 28 school supply giveaway. She said that children participating must be present at registration.

Mary Gonzales said everyone is welcome to register and there is no judgment. She said people can’t ever know the true hurt someone is going through from what is happening on the outside.

Mary Gonzales said the school supply drive is for students from kindergarten to college. She said the school supply giveaway has extended to surrounding areas of Artesia, Dexter and Hagerman.

For over 30 years, Johnny and Mary Gonzales — along with family, friends and other volunteers — would host community events near holidays and throughout the year giving families everything from school supplies to Thanksgiving meals. Johnny Gonzales is known for his Prison Doors Ministry and Community Volunteer Program.

At this time, Mary Gonzales said monetary and school supply donations are being accepted. Donations can be mailed to P.O. Box 2790, Roswell, NM 88202, or delivered in person to 1101 Caminisito St.

For physical donations, Mary Gonzales said the giveaway is in need of backpacks more than anything — along with rulers, scissors, glue sticks, pens and school boxes.

Mary Gonzales said there are a lot of people in need and Roswell needs more community service. She said people need to have a compassionate heart and a desire to give to others.

“I pray people get this vision and move on it because there’s so much need,” Mary Gonzales said. “I know there are people that need in this community — and this is our community.”
