Students from Washington Avenue Elementary School gathered in Cahoon Park Thursday afternoon to enjoy a community outing and experience the free summer lunch program, which continues through July 27. Principal Amanda Arnold, who said kindergarten through fifth-grade students were able to participate in the event, expressed gratitude for the lunch program to Lyman Graham, food service director with the Roswell Independent School District, and other community entities, such as Healthy Kids Chaves County and Southwest Dairy, as well as the city and the county. Beck Joyce from Healthy Kids said high school students can develop mentoring relationships throughout the summer by assisting with the lunch program. Roswell High School’s football team and Goddard High School’s soccer team were present at Thursday’s event, during which about 160 meals were given away, according to lunch staff.
