Wilburn Gene Johnson, age 82, died on Thursday, July 19, 2018, of Alzheimer’s Disease, surrounded by family at Poet’s Walk, an assisted living facility in Fredericksburg, Virginia. He was born in Gran Quivira, New Mexico, to Othel Ernest and Nancy Virginia Johnson on April 26, 1936. Wilburn was the oldest of two children.

In 1954, Wilburn graduated from Roswell High School. He married Sharon Dell Kemp, of Eunice, New Mexico, on September 12, 1959. Wilburn worked for Mountain Bell and AT&T for more than thirty years before retiring. He also served eleven years in the New Mexico National Guard.

Surviving to cherish Wilburn’s memory are his wife, Sharon, of fifty-eight years; two daughters and their husbands: Robin and John Schlegel of Las Cruces, NM, and Cindy and Shane Frith, of King George, VA; grandsons: Brady Crump, Benjamin Frith and Jonah Frith; granddaughter, Amanda Crump; and sister, Deborah Lynn Kemp, of Roswell, NM.

Preceding Wilburn in death was his mother, Nancy Johnson Wycherly.

A Memorial Service is scheduled for Wilburn on Saturday, July 28, 2018, at 11:30 AM at Anderson Bethany Funeral Home. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Wilburn’s life.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made instead to the Roswell Joy Center: Adult Day Care Program.

Wilburn’s tribute was beautifully written in his honor by his family.
