Gina Yeager, the courthouse dog coordinator, said the program has “amazing” sponsors and donors and the team fundraises to make up any leftover costs. Yeager said the program has four dogs to assist with victims and witnesses of crimes in Chaves, Eddy, and Lea counties and is hoping to gain two more dogs through fundraising. She said it costs $7,000 for the dog and handler to be trained and around $10,000 for the dog annually, including vet care and food. She said the dogs know up to 90 commands, understand sign language and tend to be drawn to the person who is “sad or stressed out.”
