Book Talk by Tomás González

Nordic strategies in dealing with the daily stresses of the world have recently become more mainstream. There is the way of the Swedish and Norwegians who subscribe to the relaxation method of lagom and the Danish who believe in the philosophy of hygge, which is the “embracing of ambiance, luxuriating in leisureliness, and relishing the moment”. The book by Miska Rantanen, “Päntsdrunk (Kalsarikänni): The Finnish Path to Relaxation (Drinking at Home, Alone, in Your Underwear)” provides a model of the Finnish way to achieve that happiness and stress-free way of living.

The first step to achieving this goal of relaxation is to understand what exactly pantsdrunk is. The main ingredient to a successful pantsdrunk night is alcohol, but it’s not mandatory, just a suggestion to an authentic pantsdrunk night. After that ingredient is taken care of, one must cleanse their conscience of any negative thoughts or feelings that happened during the week or day. Dress code usually consists of pajamas and the location is almost always indoors. It is encouraged to have a pantsdrunk night solo or with one or two close friends. Other things that make a successful night of relaxation are a cozy environment, a selection of snacks, entertainment (i.e. television, movies, music, video games, mobile devices), and once all these things are set, you can unwind like the Fins and achieve a state of well-being and relaxation.

One might question if this is really the best or healthiest way to achieve bliss and relaxation, but there are statistics to back up this Finnish method. Since Finland’s independence, they have transformed from a poor farming society to one of the most prosperous nations in the world. According to Statistics Finland, Finland is the most stable, safest country in the world, near the top of the list in well-being, and has the most personal freedoms and best educational system in the world. So despite how crazy this practice of relaxation may sound to some, the numbers and facts are there to prove their must be a bit of truth is this concept.

More tips in the book include what drinks to sample, snacks to keep in stock, and taking in some self-pity to confront and deal with the problems one is facing and letting go of the problems they have no control over. Small exercises help calm the physical body for those who may sit at a desk most of the work week. Also, things to avoid such as going out to meet friends somewhere and doing any kind of detailed task. All of these helpful guides and tips are laid out by Rantanen to emulate the ways of relaxation practiced by one of the happiest countries in the world.
