The Sweet Leilanis Hula group from the Roswell Adult and Recreation Center have been busy since early spring performing at Brookdale East and West in April. In May they performed at Mission Arch. June was a three-event month with a Luau in memory of Daniel Madrid, the Roswell Adult and Recreation Center Summer Youth Program and Job Corps Asian-Pacific Celebration. On Aug. 18, they performed for the Girl Scout Luau and will also be at Peachtree on Aug. 31. The group shares their love of island culture using instruments and chants that are a part of the Hawaiian aloha spirit, such as ukulele, ipu and puili, which are percussion instruments made from gourds and bamboo, uli uli, and Hawaiian costumes and accessories.
