Yvonne Aldana, left, and Lanie Smith, right, paint walls in the Boys and Girls Club of Roswell Saturday morning as part of a “Day of Service, Day of Caring,” coordinated by United Way of Chaves County. These two volunteers are from Pioneer Bank, but the effort that included painting three rooms and a hallway as well as working on some landscaping also brought out volunteer crews from Xcel Energy, Wells Fargo Bank, United Way and Albertsons. Sherry Mumford, executive director of United Way, said that the volunteer day is an annual tradition that precedes the group’s fundraising campaign kick-off. That will happen Sept. 11 of this year, when the group begins its work to raise $500,000 for area nonprofits. Roswell City Manager Joe Neeb and his wife, Beth, will serve as the volunteer chairs of the campaign.
