2018 Cross Country

The 2018 Cross Country season got underway last Saturday at Gateway Christian School with a record number of participants from more than 20 area schools participating in the 6th Annual “2K Blast” – a 2000 meter run for elementary and middle school students. Over 100 athletes started and finished on the Gateway Track and but ran most of the race in the open fields just South of the school.

For the first time, organizers also held an open division race for runners and walkers on the same course before the 2K Blast. Called the “Roswell-X” this was the first of 3 events slated to be held in conjunction with local high school cross country meets. The next two Roswell-X events will be at the NMMI Invitational on September 15 and the RISD Pecos Valley Invitational on October 13.

In the Girls Middle School division, Gomez Natalie Gomez of Hagerman finished first and Mary Kathryn Olvera from Sidney Gutierrez was a close 2nd. Kayley Smith from Gateway Christian was 3rd. David Chacon of Hagerman won the Boys Middle School Division, just ahead of Gateway’s Jace Worley and Berrendo’s Oscar Varela.

In the Elementary Division, the top girl was Neveah McDaniel from Gateway. Quiana Gonzales from Military Heights was 2nd and Paisley Wood from Valley View was 3rd. In the younger boys division, Valley View took the top two slots with Martin Carreon taking the win and teammate Makhi Stogden finishing2nd. Del Norte’s Zackary McCracken was third.
