The local employees of a multi-family housing management company will host a fundraiser for the Roswell men’s and women’s homeless shelters and for the JOY Center in about two weeks.

The event will start at 10 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 14, at 2601 N. Main in front of the Rent-A-Center store. J.L. Gray Co. employees will collect donations of money, coats and blankets to give to the homeless shelters and the senior citizens served by the JOY Centers of Chaves County. Hot dogs and other food also will be provided. The event has no definite end time but is expected to go until all the food is given out.

Jeff Curry, director of development for the J.L. Gray Co., said that the local employees came up with the idea as their way of participating in the Apartment Association of New Mexico’s statewide volunteer day. J.L. Gray operates in several states and focuses on providing affordable rental housing. In Roswell, it operates the Cielo de Oro Senior Apartments and the Rio Vista Senior Apartments.

“Our employees work daily with families and individuals that have come from homelessness or at risk of being homeless,” said Curry. “We understand the importance of programs that help people find stable and affordable housing.”

He also pointed to increased homelessness in the state.

A December 2017 assessment report to Congress by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development indicated that New Mexico had an estimated 2,482 homeless people during a point-in-time survey taken in January 2017. Of those, about 32.1 percent, or 796 were unsheltered, and 617 were members of families with children. The report also stated that the number of homeless in the state increased by 9.7 percent from 2016.

Groups that already have signed up to sponsor or support the event include Health Quest, New Mexico Gas, Addus Homecare, Fergie’s Plumbing, local restaurant owners, Wells Fargo Bank and businessman and Chaves County Board of Commissioner candidate Michael Trujillo.
