Marilyn Jane Atwood (née Aveyard), 83, passed away Wednesday, September 5, after a prolonged illness.
Marilyn was born in Gardner, Massachusetts, March 3, 1934, to Evelyn (Whitney) Aveyard Goodrich and Norman F. Aveyard. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree from West Virginia Wesleyan College where she was in Alpha Delta Pi.
Marilyn taught school for a number of years and then went to the University of Colorado in Colorado Springs where she earned a Master of Arts degree in counseling. She retired from Beth-El College of Nursing where she served as director of student affairs.
She married Charles L. Atwood in Gardner, Massachusetts, in 1958 when they were both teaching at the same consolidated school. They taught in several different states before retiring to Roswell. They had been married 55 years when Charles passed away in 2014.
Marilyn is survived by daughter Barrie L. Atwood of the home; daughter Brooke Atwood-Teitz and husband Matt Teitz of Louisville, Kentucky; and son Brian C. Atwood of Springfield, Oregon. She had 2 grandchildren, Amanda and Joshua Israel of Denver, Colorado; a sister, Harriet Fischer; and 2 brothers, Arthur and Bradley Goodrich, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Marilyn and Charles were among the first to sign up for the Senior Circle of Eastern New Mexico Medical Center when it started in 1999, and became very active there. Marilyn volunteered there twice a week for about 16 years. Charles did a variety of tasks including playing Santa Claus at Christmas parties. Marilyn was also an active member of the Newcomers Club.
No services are planned at Marilyn’s request. Her remains will be taken to the Shrine of Remembrance at Evergreen Park, Colorado Springs, where Charles was taken. Both are sorely missed and will be for a long time to come.
