MainStreet Roswell received a 2018 award for excellence recently from New Mexico MainStreet, part of the New Mexico Economic Development Department.

The local group, which works to preserve and improve the downtown business district and to promote businesses in its corridor, was given the award Aug. 9 during the state quarterly meeting in Raton. MainStreet Roswell received the “Build Capacity for Local Economic Revitalization and Redevelopment Efforts Award.”

MainStreet’s staff leader, Kathy Lay, also was recognized for becoming a certified executive director.

Lay said the group’s recognition came because MainStreet Roswell is now an accredited member of the New Mexico MainStreet, not just an affiliate, and because it was able to prove that it had strengthened or built many relationships with local organizations such as the Roswell Chamber of Commerce, the Hispano Chamber of Commerce and the International UFO Museum and Research.

“We have the capacity to do more in the district because of the relationships that have been built and the work that has been done,” Lay said.

The award announcement presented by the state organization praised MainStreet Roswell for its sponsorship of events such as the Farmer’s Market, the UFO Festival, the Chile Cheese Festival and First Fridays, which it noted brings tourists and visitors to the area and to downtown businesses.

The announcement also recognized the local group for its annual “MainStreet Has a Heart” fundraiser in which its member businesses raise money for local charities and nonprofits, the it did with Xcel Energy to decorate downtown lights during the Christmas season, and for the grants it obtained to help local businesses update and improve their storefronts.
