Law enforcement are searching for nine people thought to be in the U.S. illegally after they fled Roswell Police early Monday morning.

The nine individuals were traveling with 12 others in an SUV that was traveling south in the northbound lanes of South Main Street when a Roswell Police Department officer stopped the vehicle, RPD Public Information Officer Todd Wildermuth said in an email Wednesday.

The vehicle stopped at the officer’s request in a convenience store parking lot at the intersection of Brasher and Main, but sped away, west on Brasher, when the officer approached the SUV on foot.

“It (the SUV) then pulled over a short distance away on Brasher and the driver and passengers fled on foot into a field and beyond,” according to Wildermuth.

As law enforcement detained some of those who had been in the vehicle, further investigation indicated some or all of the individuals that were in the vehicle may have been in the U.S. illegally.

By 7:30 a.m. Monday, 12 individuals who had fled the vehicle had been apprehended and nine remained at-large. Federal immigration officials were soon contacted and took the 12 individuals captured into federal custody.

Wildermuth on Wednesday referred further questions about the incident to U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE), who he said are now in charge of the investigation.

Attempts to contact ICE were unsuccessful by press time Wednesday.
