Lily Marie Renteria, 66, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 25, 2018, surrounded by her beloved family. She passed away after a brief re-occurrence with cancer, in which she fought hard until the end. A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, October 5, 2018, 2:00 PM, at Anderson Bethany Funeral Home Chapel. Please take a moment and share a fond memory or kind expression of sympathy for Lily’s family at andersonbethany.com.

On April 20, 1952, Lily was born in Roswell, NM, to Manuel R Renteria, Sr. and Trinity Aguilar. She was a hard worker at a young age. Being a single parent, providing for her one and only child, Tina, Lily did as much as she could. She always made sure her daughter was well taken care of, especially while she worked. Her strongest supporter was her oldest sister, Manuelita “Lee,” who helped out whenever she was needed. They shared a special bond, which included the care and well being of their children, Rick and Tina.

Tina was Lily’s whole world. Lily guided her all the way through high school, college, marriage, and then with her grandchildren, Abrianna and Annalise. Her granddaughters were her pride and joy. She always made sure they had what they needed or wanted. Lily spent lots of quality time with them, teaching them how to read and write at a very young age.

Having a passion for babysitting her nieces and nephews, Lily worked with each of them, teaching them to read and write. She always made sure they knew there was a safe place for them as they grew up. At times, Lily took a few of them in and gave them a place to stay when they needed. When they all grew up and began their own families, she sought out her next adventure. She reached out for the opinion of her daughter and son-in-law, whom both encouraged her to take the position as a tutor at a local literacy organization. Lily began there as an ESL tutor, helping people with reading, writing, and math. She had the pleasure of meeting many different people, with many different needs. Her students meant a lot to her, and she helped them in any way she could. Lily later became the office assistant, where she developed a special friendship with some of the directors and tutors, including Dore Luna-Gonzales, Jan Murrow-Bostic, Melissa Urban-Cobos, and John Grogan.

Lily will be missed by all of those who knew her, and her memory and encouragement will live on in our hearts forever. “We love you Nans,” Abri and Anny.

Lily’s tribute was beautifully written in her honor by her family.

When tomorrow starts without me,
and I’m not here to see,
if the sun should rise and find your eyes,
filled with tears for me.
I wish so much you wouldn’t cry,
the way you did today,
while thinking of the many things,
we didn’t get to say.
I know how much you love me,
as much as I love you,
and each time you think of me,
I know you’ll miss me too.
When tomorrow starts without me,
don’t think we’re far apart,
for every time you think of me,
I’m right there in your heart.
