Even at the age of five, BrookLynn Ballard of Roswell has already won two awards for the animals she has shown: one for a duck and another for a dairy goat.

Ballard won the Eastern New Mexico State Fair 2018 Top Quacker Award for showing her eight-month-old call duck Lilly.

Ballard received a small ceramic duck and a certificate for her hard work.

She and her goat Mindy won first place among boosters. Boosters are children ages 5 to 9 who take part in livestock competitions.

Ballard has taken part in livestock competitions before and she said showing animals is her favorite part about raising them “because they are so cute.”

Ballard said the hardest part of raising animals is feeding, cleaning and grooming them.

Lilly was in the duck barn Friday night and would return home after the fair to be reunited with the four other ducks Ballard also raises.

Entering animals into livestock competitions though is a family affair.

Ballard’s sister Victoria also won ninth place for a mutton cross lamb she showed at Wednesday’s lamb show at the fair.
