The Roswell Coyotes on Friday soundly defeated the Cathedral (El Paso, Texas) Fighting Irish, improving their record on the season to 5-1 and again demonstrating why they’re ranked No.1 in Class 5A in the state of New Mexico.

Roswell came into the contest ranked by MaxPreps.com as the state’s top team in 5A — Goddard was ranked second.

The Coyotes climbed to the top of their classification’s rankings with wins over Lovington, Los Lunas, Miyamura — and Belen, who they thumped on the road last week, 35-8.

The Fighting Irish, meanwhile, had a tougher time of it leading up to Friday’s contest. Cathedral was winless at 0-3 entering the game, their losses coming at the hands of Texas squads San Elizario, Fabens and Riverside.

On Friday evening, both teams’ trends continued, as Roswell did nothing to diminish its ranking while defeating Cathedral 55-6, sending the Fighting Irish to a record of 0-4.

The Coyotes came out like gangbusters.

After kicking off to begin the game, the Coyotes handily held Cathedral to a three-and-out, forcing a punt — a punt that Jasia Reese returned 60 yards for Roswell’s first touchdown of the night.

With 10:12 remaining in the first quarter, the scoreboard was already beginning to tilt in the Coyotes’ favor, 7-0.

The score would grow more lopsided later in the first. With 2:40 left in the quarter, Roswell took over on their own 40 after forcing one of many Cathedral punts. A pair of runs by Justin Carrasco and a completion from quarterback Ethan Valenzuela to Joel Sanchez took the Coyotes to the Cathedral 1-yard line.

From there, Valenzuela hit Sanchez with a 1-yard touchdown pass, making it 14-0 with 1:44 left in the first.

As the final seconds of the quarter were ticking off the clock, Freddy Anaya would get in on the act, returning another Fighting Irish punt 55 yards for a touchdown and making it 21-0.

And the Coyotes, at that point, were rolling.

Early in the second quarter, the defense again came up with a takeaway as Reece intercepted the ball and took it to the Cathedral 25.

Roswell drove the ball to the Cathedral one on the ensuing drive, and from there Roderick Sedillo added the exclamation point, making it Roswell 28, Cathedral 0. That score would hold until the end of the half.

The Coyotes would begin substituting as they extended their lead to 42-0 by the end of the third quarter. They would add two more touchdowns — one followed by a blocked extra point — in the fourth.

Cathedral would get on the scoreboard late for the 55-6 final.

The Coyotes will host Piedra Vista next week.
