Area voters will get a chance to view the next televised debate between the two candidates for New Mexico governor, while also getting to meet and learn about candidates on the ballot in local, state legislative and judicial races.

The Leadership Roswell Alumni Association is holding a public viewing party Tuesday, Oct. 16 at the Roswell Country Club at 2601 Urton Road. Admission to the event is free.

Elaine Davies Mayfield, a member of the Association, said the venue can seat up to 150 people. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. for the event.

The televised debate between Democratic candidate and U.S. Rep. Michelle Lujan Grisham and Republican candidate and U.S. Rep. Steve Pearce will take place live from Albuquerque and will be hosted by KOB 4 and New Mexico First. It will start promptly at 6 p.m.

Questions asked by the moderators were developed based on information and input from three town hall meetings held in September: one in Albuquerque, one in Espanola and another in Roswell.

Mayfield said that when the debate ends at about 7 p.m., candidates for local office are invited to mingle with the public and set up tables to distribute informational literature about their campaigns for about an hour after the debate.

The Alumni Association usually hosts a public forum, where candidates can introduce themselves to the public, but opted not to this year due to the lack of contested local and state legislative races, Mayfield said.

She added that a debate watch party seemed like a good idea.

She said that she does not know which candidates have arranged to be at the party or how many will come.

“We hope they will at least come and introduce themselves and avail themselves to one-on-one conversations,” Mayfield said.

People interested in attending can simply show up at 5:30 or 6 p.m. at the Roswell Country Club. People can find more information about the watch party on the Leadership Roswell Alumni Association Facebook page.
