Rainy weather didn’t stop some determined volunteers who gathered early Saturday morning to work on the upgrades to Cumberland Park on Templeton Street in Midway, near Dexter. Volunteers from Keep Chaves County Beautiful, the Midway Volunteer Fire Department and the Roswell Job Corps planned to spend the day making a gravel walking path, treating weeds and installing a privacy fence around the recycling and trash receptacles. More workdays are planned for Oct. 27 and Nov. 3, 10 and 17, as the aim is to finish the park upgrade by early  December. The project is funded by a $20,000 Keep America Beautiful-Lowe’s Community Partners Grant to the Keep Chaves County Beautiful nonprofit. Roswell Job Corps painting instructor Penny Conkling said that the vocational training center will be bringing students out to work on the project in the coming weeks. (Lisa Dunlap Photo)
