Members of the Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter 968, make the group’s first donation to the Roswell Refuge Thursday by giving $500 worth of blankets and pajamas for women and children at the shelter. From left are Roswell Refuge Director Lesli Carrerra; Frank Carrillo, sergeant-at-arms for the veterans chapter; Harry McGraw, chapter president; Stella Ross, shelter supervisor; and Justine Meadows, Roswell Refuge advocate. The Roswell Refuge runs several programs to assist women and children recovering from domestic or sexual violence. The shelter on West College Boulevard can hold up to five individuals and five women and their children while they obtain counseling, learn life skills and rebuild their lives. The veterans organization, which has about 47 local members, is involved in several philanthropic efforts each year, using donations from members and funding from the national Vietnam Veterans of America organization. Other charitable giving has included providing food to the St. Peter’s Church Food Pantry and the local Community Kitchen, giving money to local youth sports teams to sponsor participation in state tournaments and helping high school students join or travel with their sports teams or band groups.
