One man is dead and another wounded after a shooting in Artesia early Saturday.

Lindell Smith, commander of the Artesia Police Department, said Monday that police received a call at about 1 a.m. Saturday of multiple shots fired in the area of Fourth and Logan Streets near Guadalupe Park.

Fabian Ochoa, 36, of Artesia was transported to Artesia General Hospital, where he later died of his wounds.

A second individual — a male in his mid-thirties also from Artesia — was also wounded and transported to an out-of-state hospital, and is expected to survive.

No suspects were in custody as of Monday, Smith said, and he added that evidence is still presenting itself.

Evidence of different caliber bullets was found at the scene, but Smith said he did not know for sure how many shots were fired or what caliber of bullet hit the victims.

“We are still actively working leads and processing evidence,” he said.

People with any information pertinent to the investigation are asked to contact the department at 575-746-5000.
