Incumbent Chaves County Division II magistrate judge E.J. Fouratt, a Republican, fended off a challenge by Libertarian Mayna Erika Myers on Tuesday, winning 78.61 percent of the vote according to unofficial results posted to the New Mexico Secretary of State’s website.

Fouratt had tallied 8,054 votes to Myers’ 2,191, as of just after 10 p.m.

Magistrate judges serve four-year terms. They preside over cases such as traffic violations, landlord-tenant disputes, contract disagreements and criminal misdemeanors, and have jurisdiction over preliminary hearings in felony cases.

Fouratt, a former law enforcement officer, is a Roswell High School graduate who spent 20 years as a New Mexico State Police Officer, working primarily in Roswell and Clovis.
