Candidates in the race for the District 1 seat on the Chaves County Commission were within 32 votes of each other after all precincts had reported Tuesday night, according to unofficial totals posted to the New Mexico Secretary of State’s website.

Republican Dara Dana led Democrat Michael Trujillo 1,276 votes to 1,244 votes, 50.63 percent to 49.37 percent, as of just after 10 p.m. Tuesday.

Commissioners will canvass the election on Friday, deciding then on provisional ballots.

Dana, a former two-term state representative, and Trujillo, a former two-term county County Commissioner, are squaring off for the seat held by James Duffy, who is unable to run for a third term due to term limits.
