Although several media outlets across the state declared Republican Yvette Herrell the winner in New Mexico’s 2nd Congressional District, the Associated Press was still referring to the race as “too close to call” late Tuesday.

According to the New Mexico Secretary of State’s website, Herrell, a New Mexico state representative from Alamogordo, led Democrat Xochitl Torres Small, former field representative for Sen. Tom Udall, 50 percent to 49 percent as the Daily Record was going to press Tuesday night.

The southern New Mexico congressional district was represented by Republican Steve Pearce, who decided to forgo re-election to instead run for governor this year.

Multiple polls taken in the months leading up to the election showed a tight race.

Torres Small’s campaign out raised Herrell $3.8 to $1.2 million, according to campaign finance data from the campaigns provided to the New Mexico Secretary of State.
