Thanksgiving breaks for local schools

Eastern New Mexico University-Roswell will observe the Thanksgiving recess beginning at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, November 21. No classes will be held after 5 p.m. that day.

All campus offices will be closed and classes will not be held Nov. 22-25. Instruction will resume and the campus will reopen on Monday, Nov. 26. For campus information, call (575) 624-7000.

Local public K-12 schools and the New Mexico Military Institute are closed Nov. 19 through Nov. 23.

The 34th Annual Reindeer Run is scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 1. The event offers a competitive 10K run, 10K walk, 5K run and 5K walk, as well as an Elf Scramble Fun Run for ages 4 to 8.

The 10K and 5K races begin at 9 a.m. at the Roswell Adult and Recreation Center, 807 N. Missouri Ave. The Elf Scramble will start about 10:15 a.m. Ages 4 to 5 will be running a quarter mile, and ages 6 to 8 will race for a half mile. All children will receive a medal upon finishing.

An award will be given to the best “Christmassy” outfit and drawings for various items will be conducted after the races. T-shirts will be given to all participants.

Entry forms for the 10K and 5K races are available at the Roswell Adult and Recreation Center or online at active.com. Pre-registration is taking place until race day. Registration on race day will be from 7 to 8:30 a.m. at the Adult and Recreation Center. Packet pick-up will be Friday, Nov. 30, at the center from 5 to 8 p.m. or on race day morning from 7 to 8:30 a.m.

The 10K and 5K races pre-registration fee is $30 plus a can of food for a local food bank. On race day, registration is $35 (no credit cards on race day) plus a can of food for the food bank. Anyone who registers and pays online should bring the can of food when picking up his or her packet. The Elf Scramble is $5 per child, and registration will be on race day from 7 to 10 a.m.

Rio Pecos Medical Associates will be on hand to offer free glucose and cholesterol screening tests on race day from 7 to 8 a.m. Blood-pressure checks will also be available. If participating in the glucose/cholesterol testing, participants need to fast beginning the previous evening and fill out paperwork attached to the entry form.
