New Mexico State Police issued 5,233 traffic citations, arrested 59 drunk drivers and made eight drug-related arrests across the state this Thanksgiving, all part of an increase in the presence of State Police on roads across New Mexico.

The heightened police presence was part of a Combined Accident Reduction Effort or CARE, high intensity traffic operations meant to reduce crashes and dangerous driving behavior on roads across the state from Wednesday Nov. 21 to Sunday Nov. 26, according to a press release from the New Mexico State Police.

State Police during that period also worked on 49 vehicle crashes across the state, including one fatal crash. The Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Bureau issued 341 commercial vehicle citations and conducted more than 571 commercial vehicle inspections, the release states.

The safety of motorists is a top priority for State Police officers, the release states, and holiday travel operations by state police will continue throughout the winter holidays.
