New Mexico State Police will step up their presence on the roads throughout the state in a push to curb incidents of driving under the influence.

A release from the State Police states that the department will conduct sobriety checkpoints and saturation patrols as well as registration, insurance and driver’s license checkpoints in all of New Mexico’s counties throughout December.

The checkpoints are a way to alter society’s attitudes about drinking and driving, according to the release.

State Police are seeking to raise awareness about the checkpoints as a way to reduce alcohol-related fatalities through media attention and intensive advertising, the release states.
