Design guidelines for development on the city-owned Old Municipal Airport property will move forward following recommendation by the City of Roswell Planning and Zoning Commission.

The commission voted Tuesday night to recommend the updates to the city zoning ordinance that will govern such things as the appearance and structure of buildings, signage, awnings, lighting and parking. The general concept is to encourage an art-deco feel, according to city documents.

“The idea is here that we try to create a place that is unified and somehow different,” said Community Development Manager Bill Morris.

The zoning ordinance additions now will be considered by the Roswell City Council Legal Committee, which will decide whether to forward them to the entire City Council for adoption.

The Old Municipal Airport property is located in the northwest part of the city near the Cielo Grande Recreation Area on West 19th Street. City staff want to lay the groundwork for future development of the area by private developers. Morris explained that the northwest quadrant of the property especially is envisioned as a mixed-use area of residential and commercial structures and possibly gazebos and common areas.

“I am excited about the possibilities of OMA,” said Riley Armstrong, chair of the Planning and Zoning Commission.

Morris said that city staff plan to introduce a plat to the commission by early spring that will divide the property into parcels for future development.
