Two men were arrested Wednesday in connection with a local murder that happened six years ago.

Luis Felipe Jimenez, 28, and Joseph Donald Barnhill, 31, were arrested late Wednesday and charged with first-degree murder and aggravated burglary, according to a press release from the Roswell Police Department.

Jimenez was arrested late Wednesday when he showed up at the U.S. Probation Office in Roswell for an appointment. Barnhill was served with an arrest warrant the same day at the Chaves County Detention Center, where he was being held for failure to appear in an unrelated court case, the release states.

The arrests come after the Roswell Police and Fifth Judicial District Attorney’s Office have spent six years conducting an investigation to determine the identities of the two perpetrators of a burglary that became a homicide.

Jimenez and Barnhill are charged in the Dec. 11, 2012 murder of Saul Sanchez, 39, of Denver City, Texas.

Investigators have determined that Sanchez, his wife and two daughters arrived at a friend’s house at the 1500 block of West Third Street where they had been staying at in Roswell, when they found it had been ransacked, according to the release.

The owners of the house were friends of the Sanchezs who were out of town at the time and allowed the Sanchezs to use the home while they were in town for a funeral, the release states.

The family had arrived back at the house after the funeral to pack up their belongings into their vehicle, when Sanchez spotted at least one of the burglars inside the house carrying some of the family’s belongings.

Sanchez then confronted one of the burglars in a hallway and was shot. He died at the scene. The wife and two daughters — then ages 6 and 16 — retreated into a room close by.

The release states investigators continue to find out other details in the case.

After their arrests in the case, Jimenez and Barnhill were both being held at the detention center without bond pending their arraignments.
