Veterans who could use a good Christmas meal can sign up for a food basket with the Chaves County Veterans Interagency Group.

The group, which meets quarterly and works to coordinate services for veterans in the area, will give away about 10 baskets filled with Christmas meal supplies on Dec. 23 and Dec. 24. The baskets will be provided to people who are verified as veterans and have been screened for demonstrated need. This is the third year for the effort.

“This time of year is tough mentally for everybody, not only veterans, and we just want to relieve the strain of them being able to provide a Christmas dinner,” said Jim Cassidy, the founder of the interagency group and business advisor of the Veterans Business Outreach Center of the New Mexico Department of Veterans Services. “That is the whole thing behind it, to let them know we care and we are here for them.”

Cassidy said that each basket will have a pre-cooked ham, salad, rolls, vegetables, mashed potatoes and gravy, pie and fruit. The Veterans Interagency Group has received the supplies and donations needed for this year, Cassidy said.

To ask to receive a basket, people can contact Veterans Service Officer Danielle Thompson, 575-624-6086, or Cassidy at 575-624-6002.
