The New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) District Two will make a safety upgrade at the intersection of U.S. 285 and Hobson Road in Chaves County this winter.

NMDOT will extend the northbound turning lane, or auxiliary lane, on U.S. 285 to Hobson Road West, according to a press release from NMDOT.

The dedicated extended left turn for northbound traffic is aimed at improving access to Hobson Road West from U.S. 285. The work is being done in the interest of safety for the traveling public, including those traveling to the Roswell International Air Center, according to the press release.

The extended auxiliary lane will provide drivers with an opportunity to slow down in a space not used by high-speed through traffic.

“We are committed to establishing effective partnerships with the City of Roswell and Chaves County to improve safety and access to the Roswell International Air Center,” District Two Engineer Tim Parker said. “It’s an indicator of deep commitment to the safety of the community and reduce the chance of accidents that might occur traveling to the Roswell Industrial Air Center as our region continues to grow.”
