A woman died Friday in a fatal crash between Dexter and Roswell.

The crash occurred at about 4 p.m. on U.S. Highway 285 and Orchard Park Road between Dexter and Roswell, according to a press release from the New Mexico State Police.

Maxine Peebles, 81, of Estes Park Colorado, suffered fatal injuries in the accident and was later pronounced deceased at an area hospital by the office of the Medical Investigator, the release reads.

Initial findings indicate that a 1994 Toyota was traveling West on Orchard Park Road when it crossed U.S. 285 and failed to yield the right of way to oncoming traffic.

The Toyota was then struck by a 1998 Ford Windstar, in which Peebles was a passenger.
