New graduates of Eastern New Mexico University-Roswell should plan carefully for the future, learn what they can control and accept what they can’t, be true to their values and remember all those who have supported them, according to their 70th Commencement Convocation speaker Sara Hankins.

Hankins is a 2016 graduate of Goddard High School, an ENMU-R Presidential Scholar, current Goddard High volleyball coach and new ENMU-R alumna with an Associate of Arts degree in University Studies. She used the metaphor of designing and constructing a home to provide some advice about next steps as she addressed fellow graduates at the Roswell Convention Center Thursday night.

Saying to the group that they should not cut corners, she explained, “I was always told growing up that anything worth having is worth the work to get it. Invest time and effort into only the things that build you up and help to push you in the right direction.”

More than 120 ENMU-R recipients of certificates and associate degrees participated in the ceremony — as did four bachelor’s degree recipients and a master’s degree graduate from Eastern New Mexico University of Portales — but more than 300 people actually earned certificates or degrees during the fall 2018 semester, according to Dr. Shawn Powell, president of ENMU-R.

“It took courage and determination to continue your education in spite of all the challenges along the way,” Powell said. “Your persistence in reaching this goal is appreciated.”
