Mary Spencer, 95, passed away peacefully in St. Paul, NE on Dec. 24th, 2018.

Mary was born Jan. 6th, 1923 in Ainsworth, NE to Alta F. and Fred E. Coleman.   She attended school in Ainsworth and then Chadron State College in Chadron, NE.  where she graduated with a degree in teaching.

She met and married Ralph Spencer of Brewster, NE, in 1951 and together they made homes for themselves and their family in Springview, NE and Sidney, NE.  She and Ralph moved to Roswell, NM in July of 1981 and Ralph died abruptly in June of 1982.

Mary moved to Grand Island, NE in 2003, where she lived until she required the tender care of Brookfield Park in St. Paul, NE.

Mary taught country school immediately after high school after what was then called Normal Training—a basic teaching course with passing standards to aid in the teacher shortage during the war effort. (WWII) After obtaining her teaching degree, she taught in Ogallala, NE, and later substituted in the Sidney, NE school system.

She loved gardening, houseplants, reading, walking and hiking, and listening to music.  Her Dutch apple pies were legendary.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph, and by brother Eugene (Velora) Coleman, and sisters Doris (Alex) Schumacher and Alvina Mundorf.

She is survived by her children Ruth Spencer of Leadville, CO; Steve (Carolyn) Spencer of Grand Island, NE and Michael (Angela) Spencer of Sutherland, NE.  She is also survived by her brother Lewy (Geraldine) Coleman of Valentine, NE., five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Memorial Services will be scheduled at a later date.

All Faiths Funeral Home is entrusted with the arrangements.
