Our beloved father and “Grampy”, Troy Cartes Carlton, passed away peacefully in his sleep and into the hands of the Lord on January 6, 2019, in Dallas, Texas. Troy was born to Oscar Franklin and Mae Frazier Carlton on August 28, 1926 in Elmore City, Oklahoma.

Overcoming polio as a child, Troy graduated from Raymondville, Texas High School, and served in the US Air Force during the post WWII Occupation. He subsequently earned a Master’s Degree in Secondary Education (History/Geography) at Texas A&I in Kingsville, TX and began a career in education. Troy and wife and fellow RISD teacher Marlene moved their young family to Roswell, NM in 1960, where he taught classes at Sierra, Yucca and Mountain View Middle Schools for over 20 years. Troy assisted in coaching his sons in athletics and served as Assistant Scoutmaster with their Boy Scout Troop, chartered by the First Christian Church in Roswell. Troy served as a deacon in the Church, and for many, many years thereafter, actively participated as a volunteer in their community service activities.

Troy is survived by his wife of almost 65 years, Marlene Lois Holland Carlton of Dallas, Texas, and by sons Steven Carlton (wife Anne and daughter Elizabeth) and Mark Carlton (wife Lynn and sons Adam and Zachary). And also by numerous extended Carlton and Holland family members.

Troy was preceded in death by his mother and father, his sister Zelma Hudson, and brothers Clergie, Jack and Leroy Carlton.

Troy and Marlene decided many years ago that their beloved, adopted hometown of Roswell would be their final resting place together, and made appropriate pre-needs arrangements. In accordance with their wishes, a celebration of Troy’s life will be held in Roswell at a future date.
