Pictured are students Beau McFadin and Emery King, the two finalists of the Scripps National Spelling Bee, and third-grade teacher Carolina Edwards, at Berrendo Elementary School on Wednesday afternoon. Around 30 students participated by spelling words in the first through eighth-grade level. King, age 10 and a fourth-grader, won first place and said she practiced spelling her list of words extensively. McFadin, 11 and a fifth-grader, won second place and Lorelei Rahlf, not pictured, was the third finalist. Principal Brittany Griffen said King will go on to compete at next level in March in El Paso, Texas. (Alison Penn Photo )
