‘Holey Landscape!’ Contest invites young artists

Holey Landscape! — Guadalupe Mountains Annual Youth Poster Contest

Guadalupe Mountains National Park, in partnership with the National Cave and Karst Research Institute, invites all young artists between the ages of 6-17 to participate in its fourth annual Youth Poster Contest.

This year’s theme focuses on karst and its importance in the natural world. Interested artists can download the 2019 poster contest entry form on the Guadalupe Mountains Website.

Mountain Smoke BBQ Festival

The Mountain Smoke BBQ Festival takes place at Wingfield Park, kicking off on Friday at noon.

The BBQ competition is a Kansas City Barbecue Association sanctioned contest. There will be breweries and wineries from across New Mexico present with live music, craft vendors, children activities and local food.

Spring Love Old School Jam

Tickets are now available for the Spring Love Old School Jam Show at the Santa Ana Star Casino and Hotel, 54 Jemez Canyon Dam Road. The show starts at 7 p.m. in the Santa Ana Star Center.

Seven of the most iconic old school artists will be invading New Mexico. More than 50 top 10 singles and four hours of nonstop music. Dance the night away with Stevie B, Rose Royce, Ready For The World (Melvin Ryley), the Dazz Band, CMB, Club Nouveau and Rodney O.

Hall of Fame Induction

Sam “The Rifle” Etcheverry (May 20, 1930 – August 29, 2009) was born in Carlsbad.

He will be inducted into the Hall of Fame at the Carlsbad Museum and Art Center, 418 W. Fox St., at 9 a.m. Etcheverry’s achievements are Canadian football’s Most Outstanding Player of 1954; one of the CFL’s top players of all time; first pro quarterback to throw over 4,000 yards and set a single-game passing record in 1954.

The event is open to the public.

The Lea County Women’s Network is hosting Irish Hoopla at the Lea County Event Center, 5101 N. Lovington Hwy., at 6:30 p.m. There will be a silent and live auction, cash bar and hors d’oeuvres. All proceeds go to its scholarship and mentor programs.

Xtreme Force Promotions and Roach Digital Media present Carlsbad’s first ComicCon: Hollywood Action Fest And Anime Expo at Walter Gerrells Performing Arts Center, 4012 National Parks Hwy., with opening times on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

A tour of the first atomic bomb site. Participants drive their own vehicle to the historic site in a caravan.

ECSP Rodeos Flag Rider Tryouts

ECSP is looking for flag riders to carry sponsor flags during its events, as well as parades.

Tryouts start at eCSP Arena, 1601 E. Greene St., at 6 p.m. sharp. Tryout has to be on the horse or horses that will be ridden and be owned by the rider as well as tack. Horse must be healthy and sound. Competitive riders must have their own straw hat.
